Information and Discussion Session
Social Housing

The City is proposing to evict the current residents of CGH and build social housing, a rental model catering to people earning stable household incomes between R1850 – R22000 per month, on the site.

For this reason, we dedicated a session to understanding what social housing actually is.

We looked at the criteria to qualify for social housing, what it can look like and cost, why social housing is important for spatial restructuring and the limitations of social housing.

We played out scenarios of various residents with different life circumstances to help each other understand who this model will work for and who it will not work for.

There was a clear sense from the participants that social housing will not work for all CGH residents and that other options are needed to accommodate all residents including those that are unemployed, are retired, have unstable income, run their own businesses, want to own, are blacklisted or have a criminal record. Concerns around affordability and tenure security came out strongly.
