Housing crisis: from Athene, Budapest, Cape Town and Istanbul
May 2022
Bevil Lucas visited Istanbul where he participated in an online seminar at MAD (Centre for Spatial Justice). The topic Housing crisis and activism: perspectives from Athene, Budapest, Cape Town and Istanbul was online on 14 May 2022.
In response, the Postanes delegation from Istanbul arrived in Cape Town and was hosted by the Bertha Foundation at Bertha House as part of the Bertha Spaces Programme. The event, Making International Solidarity Work took place on 29th July 2022 and included a short film of the tour of the delegation in South Africa.
The most significant elements that emerged in the discussion were:
the importance of building practical self – organizing responses without waiting for government intervention.
the choice towards building one’s own activity instead of risking “dependency” on national, provincial and local levels of State
the need to build community in all its aspects, not only those of people’s struggle, but also those of self –management and common celebration.
